Our Mission – To be recognised first and foremost as a credible sports news organisation and secondly as a a provider of opportunities; where students can develop, hone and practice their skills in a real-life working environment.
Our Vision – To become a multi-platform sports news service, fusing the brightest talent in the region with the latest media technology to offer a fully engaging, informative and interactive home for sports news
The University of Sunderland’s Institute of Sport launched SportsByte in October 2011, creating an initial opportunity for Journalism and Media students to get involved in an Industry standard learning environment, whilst helping to improve Sports coverage and content within the City.
From their work at the forefront of Sport and Media in Sunderland, the University were passionate about improving the knowledge and awareness of teams, clubs, programmes, and issues that are typically crowded out by other news stories and features in local and regional press. The two primary objectives of providing first rate journalism and coverage for sport within the area, as well as real-life and professional experience for students studying Journalism, are a perfect match.
The online news portal currently boasts a student workforce of over 150 people, which enables a huge number of sports and programmes to be covered throughout the region, bringing them much needed exposure.
