University of Sunderland Badminton 1sts clash with Cumbria University 1sts in their Northern Conference Cup match on Wednesday.

Their cup game against Cumbria follows two League defeats, after they were whitewashed 8-0 last Wednesday by Durham University 3rds.

President Brandon Wong is hopeful that his side can pull off an upset, and gain some much needed “confidence” when they continue with their league campaign.

“Last week was a big disappointment for us as a team, we don’t want to suffer a defeat like that again this season,” he said.

“Even though we had players missing, it is still a tough defeat take. Any 8-0 whitewash is hard to take.

“We want to try and put that behind us against Cumbria, and give a good performance.”

Wong also explained that he hoped to be back in action, after missing last weeks game and expected a tough challenge from Cumbria.

“Last week was frustrating because I missed out due to a clash with my timetable, then later in the week I was hit with really bad flu.

“I’m hoping that I will be fit and healthy for the game against Cumbria, because it will be a tough test.

“They may be a few divisions below us, but making sure that we all pull together and battle for a positive result is vital.

“It would be a big confidence booster for the team if we could get the win.”
