One of the world’s biggest MMA promotions ‘Bellator’ is coming to Newcastle this weekend in a massive event at the Metro Radio Arena alongside fellow promotion BAMMA in a joint show.

This is a big boost for North East combat sports and follows on the trend which Frank Warren set by holding the highly coveted Liam Smith v Liam Williams rematch at the same venue just a few weeks ago.

Former UFC star Michael Macdonald is going to be showcasing his talents headlining Bellators portion of the show, he will be fighting Frenchman Peter Liger in his first fight for Bellator.

A host of local talent will be on the bill, Sunderland’s Phillip De Fries will be fighting in a heavyweight bout against the monstrous James Thompson.

Moving over to the BAMMA Card Ryan Scope will be hoping to bounce back from his last fight, a loss at 170lb, by headlining the show and making his first attempt at world honours against another Frenchman Mickael Lebout at 155lb.

Speaking to SportsByte Scope said: “I just think I had a bit of a bad day last time out, if I fought him again I’d smash him”

Elsewhere on the card Aaron Chalmers of Geordie Shore fame will hope to continue his winning start to his MMA career with a victory against Karl Donaldson.

Chalmers said: “Hopefully tomorrow in my own city I won’t get as many (boos) but you never know.”

Colin “Freak show” Fletcher will be facing off against Frenchman Anthony Dizy, the eccentric Sunderland native joked: “I’ll mack um dizy.”
