It was a difficult day for Sunderland’s athletes in the BUCS Nationals, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.
Joey Williams, Amy Etherington and Jake Jansen were both unable to qualify for tomorrow’s finals in their respective events.
In the men’s long jump, Williams put in a gallant effort as he aimed for the qualifying target of 7.30m.
He managed to reach a distance of 6.16m on his first jump, before fouling on his second attempt.
His third jump was only 4.43m, meaning Williams was unable to reach the final tomorrow.
It was a tough afternoon for Etherington too, who found herself among a competitive field in her 400m heat.
Despite the strong competition, Etherington was able to finish a respectable third clocking up a time of 63.25s which wasn’t enough to secure a qualifying berth.
Her heat was won by Bath’s Olivia Caesar who finished in an impressive 58.22s.
Jansen also found himself alongside some high quality athletes, with the Sunderland athlete eventually finishing in 8th position while East Anglia’s Josh Entwistle wrapped up the heat.
