Rodham is optimistic despite struggling for players this season.

City Space will host the Northern Conference Cup clash between the University of Sunderland badminton men’s 1st and Huddersfield on Wednesday.

Following two consecutive heavy defeats, the Wearsiders will be looking for not only their first victory of the season, but also their first set point.

However when the sides previously met, Sunderland gave the Yorkshire side a 7-1 thrashing.

But with the lack of available players and the continuous search for new recruits, the 1st and 2nd teams have been forced into merging as one.

Badminton President Elliot Rodham said: “This cup is a good opportunity for us. Anything can happen in these types of matches, even winning the cup is a possibility.”

“It’s no secret that it’s been a disappointing start to season for both the 1st and 2nd teams, but we cannot let it get us down,” added Rodham.

Despite the tricky start, Rodham remains optimistic.

He said: “I’m sure we can get a win Wednesday, it’ll be a good test for us. Hopefully a victory will help us kick on with the rest of the season.”

Rodham, who will return to action on Wednesday, added: “We have a full strength first team for tomorrow including myself, who wouldn’t usually be able to play because of timetabling.”

Victory over the Yorkshire outfit will be a welcome distraction away from a league campaign which sees them rooted to the bottom of the table.

Action gets underway on Wednesday at 5pm.
