Jake Clarke-Salter in action for Chelsea earlier this season

Sunderland yesterday announced that Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter has joined them on loan until the end of the season.

Here at SportsByte we look at Clarke-Salter’s story so far and what he could bring to a Sunderland side rooted to the foot of the Championship table.

Born in Carshalton the central defender has been with Chelsea since the age of 9, excluding one season he spent with Sutton United when he was 11, and has risen through the youth ranks.

However, as many Chelsea youth products discover, the path to the first team is not a crystal clear one. Clarke-Salter made his Chelsea debut at the tail-end of their 2015-16 title winning campaign, replacing Pedro as a 74th minute substitute in a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa in April 2016.

Clarke-Salter’s performance drew praise from Chelsea captain John Terry who told the Evening Standard: “Jake has a great attitude. I remember watching him a couple of years ago being in control of the game and a really vocal player.

“He reminds me a bit of myself. He is doing great and I hope he goes on to take my position and get in the first team.”

Clarke-Salter spent the 2016-17 season on loan at League One side Bristol Rovers but only played 13 times in all competitions during an injury hit campaign.

He was involved in the Chelsea squad as recently as last weekend, taking his place on the bench as Chelsea drew with Norwich City, before finalising his loan move to Wearside.

Sunderland fans will be hoping Clarke-Salter can produce the kind of performances that earned him rave reviews as a member of Chelsea’s all-conquering academy sides.

The 20-year-old won three FA Youth Cup’s and two UEFA Youth League titles during his time in Chelsea’s academy and also started the 2017 Under 20 World Cup Final as England defeated Venezuela to lift the trophy.

In addition to Clarke-Salter’s defensive ability it is his leadership qualities that have also stood out as he’s made his way through the ranks at Stamford Bridge and Chris Coleman may look to the youngster to marshal his back-line.

Clarke-Salter is expected to make his debut away to Cardiff this weekend.
