Chandler began his career with Sunderland.

Sunderland Scholars assistant Jamie Chandler has expressed his delight with his first year as coach of the Foundation of Light side.

The Spennymoor Town midfielder, who has had a great year on the pitch with his side winning promotion, talked to SportsByte about how much he has enjoyed his role with the Scholars so far.

Chandler said about his involvement: “It’s been brilliant!”

“Obviously Martin [Jones, head coach] gave me the opportunity last year and once he mentioned the programme and the opportunity that was there, there was no way I was going to turn it down.

“I was still playing professional at the time and it was a tough decision to make but I’m so glad I’ve grasped it with both hands.”

The balancing act between playing for Spennymoor and coaching the Foundation of Light’s up-and-coming stars doesn’t seem to have fazed the experienced midfielder at all.

Chandler also praised the players, who are within touching distance of the league and cup double.

The Scholars take on Albion in the Community in the FA National Football Youth League Trophy Final at the Stadium of Light while in the league, the youngsters will seal the title if they win their final three matches of the season.

Chandler added: “Doing this and playing [with Spennymoor] has been fantastic and having the opportunity to be on the training pitch every day with a selection of boys like that has been brilliant.”
