Sunderland 4ths in action against York St John at Clash of the Minsters

University of Sunderland men’s football 4ths picked up their first three points of the season following an impressive 7-0 win away to York St John 5ths.

Sunderland went into the game having not played for four weeks but quickly showed their intent when Martin Kelly gave them the lead in the 6th minute.

The visitors wouldn’t let their opponents settle on the ball and their hard work payed off for a second time when Kane Tonge doubled the lead just 10 minutes later.

Kelly got his second and Sunderland’s third in the 20th minute before netting again just before the half time whistle to complete a first half hat-trick.

Sunderland started the second half the same way they started the first when Kelly again went through and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 5-0.

Five minutes later the ball was threaded through the defence once again. This time into the path of Adam Clarke who converted his chance.

It looked like visitors were settling with the six goals until Kelly burst past the York St John defender and passed the ball past the keeper to bag his 5th goal and extend the lead to seven just two minutes before the final whistle.

Sunderland will be delighted to pick up their first three points in the league this season and get revenge for their Clash of the Minsters defeat to York St John back in October.

They now face another lengthy break before their next game away to table-toppers Sheffield Hallam 4ths on January 27.
