Lancaster mens secured their ninth straight win this season with a thrilling 12-11 win against Bristol Central at Sunderland’s Aquatics Centre.
Both teams won their opening fixture on Saturday but Lancaster went into the game knowing they had already beaten Bristol in men’s Division 1, 13-8.
Lancaster were two goals ahead going into the final quarter, however, goals from John Sissons, Chris Taylor and Stuart Fennell game Bristol a shock 10-9 lead in the fourth.
The game was level at 11-11 as the one-minute bell sounded, however Lancaster’s Declan Ellwood scored the winner with just eight seconds remaining on the clock.
Also in the men’s table, Cheltenham won their first game of their Super 5s campaign beating City of Manchester 9-4.
Cheltenham had improved defensively since their defeat to Portobello the previous day, and kept Manchester quiet. They led 4-1 at halftime and despite a bit of Manchester pressure in the second half, managed to hold on to victory.
The result will be difficult for Manchester as the defending champions have lost their opening two games and are bottom of the table.
In the women’s Super 5s league, high-scoring Liverpool Lizards continued their dominant performance in the pool as they too continued their unbeaten season run against Otter.
Three goals from Fiona McCann and two each for Hazel Musgrove, Laura Hesketh, Kathryn Fowler, Alice Byrne, Grace Rowland, Lauren Tasker mean that Liverpool lead the group after the opening weekend, with an impressive 37 goals in their two games.
It was finally joy for City of Manchester as their women’s team beat Sheffield Sharks 13-2 in the last of the weekend fixtures.
Sheffield took the lead in the first quarter however conceded 13 without reply, before grabbing a consolation late on.
Sheffield and Otter are bottom of the women’s Super 5s league without a win. Having won both of their games, this weekend, City of Coventry and Liverpool Lizards are top of the league but will play each other in their next game.
Guildford will now host the men’s draw next weekend and Luton will host the women’s league on the weekend of the November 29/30.
