The University of Sunderland men’s rugby 1st team go into their crucial bottom-of-the-table clash with the University of Sheffield men’s 3rds off the back of their first win of the season.

Sunderland sit seven points adrift of their opponents but can make up a lot of ground with a win.

Sheffield’s only win of the season came when Sunderland were not able to field a team in the reverse fixture.

Sunderland come into the game with a bit of momentum following their impressive first win of the season, by a score line of 44-26 against University of Bradford men’s 1sts.

This momentum could be the difference between the two sides in midweek as Sheffield’s only recorded win this season came at the expense of Sunderland on the opening day of the season. The Wearside based team were unable to field a side and therefore a walkover was handed to Sheffield – awarding them a bonus point win.

The Yorkshire side come to Ashbrooke Sports Club to face Sunderland following a tough match away to Durham University men’s 5ths where they were only outscored by a converted try and a penalty.

A win for Sunderland is crucial in this fixture as the two sides above them are level on points, and victory before having to travel to Bradford – who are two places above them – in the new year will be a massive step towards climbing off the bottom of the table.

University of Sunderland men’s 1st match with Sheffield men’s 3rd will kick off at 1PM on Wednesday November 29 at Ashbrooke Sports Club.
