University of Sunderland netball 2nds missed the chance to make it three victories against local rivals Teesside this season, losing 39-31 at Varsity.

Sunderland narrowly trailed by one point at the end of the first quarter, with the score at 7-6 to the home side. But Teesside capitalised their lead making the score 19-14 at half time.

The visitors managed to pull back some points in the third quarter with the score at 27-24 going into the last 15 minutes, but they were unable to hold on in the final quarter and Teesside took the victory 39-31.

After the game, captain Mildred Lee said: “I think we should have won but everyone played really well and the score doesn’t really matter actually because the performance was really good.”

“We’ve beaten them twice in the league.”

Sunderland recorded both home and away victories over Teesside in the BUCS Northern 8B league, winning 38-26 and 27-33 respectively.

The netball season has now ended but Lee feels confident going into next season.

“Hopefully we will have a good team. We’re going to focus on the league and make sure everyone is committed.”
