The badminton teams struggled at COTM having fielded a host of new players.

University of Sunderland’s men’s badminton 1sts are keen to start the BUCS league campaign with a victory as they travel to neighbours Newcastle tomorrow afternoon.

The Wearsiders will be looking to avenge the opponents who defeated them on the final day of last season 6-3.

A newly assembled Sunderland side will line up for the first time together hoping to begin the season with a positive result.

Recently appointed badminton president Elliot Rodham is counting on five new players to guide the away side to victory.

“We’re taking our best five players over there, we are expecting a very hard match,” said Rodham.

The new season comes following an underwhelming Clash of the Minsters outing last Wednesday in which an experienced York St John claimed an 8-0 thumping of both the 1st and 2nd teams.

Rodham however is optimistic that they can put last weeks display behind them and kick the league campaign off with a win.

“I wasn’t at Clash of the Minsters last week and I don’t think anybody from training could go either, so we’re going into the Newcastle match tomorrow playing for the first time together as the recognised first team.”

Having narrowly missed out on promotion last term the Wearsiders will be hoping that a freshened-up squad can challenge for the league title.

Rodham added: “Of course we want to win the league, who wouldn’t? We have to stay focused and take each game as it comes.”

The team will face off against Newcastle University 2nds at the Sports Centre hall, Claremont Road, with kick off being at 1PM.
