Shildon won 2-0 against Seaham Red Star on Saturday, with future Middlesbrough player Lewis Wing involved in both goals.
Amar Purewal opened the scoring for the hosts 27 minutes in, and the lead was doubled five minutes before half time through Wing.
The result means Shildon stay third in the Northern League and The Star stay 10th.
Both sides had chances to break the deadlock keeping both keepers busy in the opening 15 minutes. Robbie Bird almost made it 1-0 to Seaham but was denied one-on-one by Nicholas Liversedge.
The hosts took the lead in the 27th minute after Wing played in Purewal behind the defence and he smashed the ball low past Shaun Newbrook.
Despite having more chances than the hosts Red Star just weren’t clinical in front of goal and paid the price when Wing scored to make it 2-0 to Shildon going into half time. The attacking midfielder swept his free kick to the opposite side of the wall into the corner from the edge of the box.
In the second half, The Star kept searching for a way back into this game but couldn’t put away any of their chances. Proctor, a second half substitute looked a threat coming forward and he should have halved the deposit to 2-1 65 minutes in. The midfielder’s close range shot was blocked wide.
Proctor had a similar chance to the previous one in the 75th minute but again couldn’t convert as Shildon defenders put their bodies on the line to block his shot. The rebound fell to fellow substitute Lee Hetherington who smashed the ball goal wards forcing Liversedge to tip the ball over the bar.
Shildon sub Paul Connor had a great opportunity to make it 3-0 just before full time. He rounded Newbrook but couldn’t slot home his shot from an awkward angle. The game finished 2-0 to the hosts.
This was Seaham’s final away game of the season and they now have three home games to finish the campaign. The first sees Sunderland RCA visit the Ferguson Motor Repair stadium on Saturday 25 March.
