Two quick-fire first-half goals saw Seaham Red Star lose 3-1 to high flying Morpeth in Saturday’s season finale.
Robbie Bird opened the scoring for Seaham 14 minutes in before Keith Graydon equalised from the spot three minutes later. Ben Sayer then made it 2-1 to Morpeth half an hour into the game, with Graydon adding his second from distance soon after to wrap up the win.
It sees Red Star stay 12th in the Northern League, with Morpeth an impressive third. The match was Seaham’s last of the season, though they are the only side in the division to have completed their fixtures.
The game started with great football being displayed in the sunshine by both sides, and eventually it was The Star who capitalised with a surprising piece of route one football. Newbrook kicked the ball long just over the Morpeth defence and Bird latched onto the ball, kept his composure and slotted home clinically to make it 1-0 to Seaham in the 14th minute.
It didn’t take long for the away side to equalise through captain Graydon. Liam Henderson was tripped by Seaham defender Bradley Staunch just inside the area, gaining his side a spot kick. Graydon smashed the ball just past keeper Shaun Newbrook who couldn’t get enough of a hand on the ball to keep it out.
It was 2-1 to the Highwaymen when Sayer took a shot from 20 yards out, catching a routed Newbrook by surprise. The ball sailed into the bottom left corner with not many people at the ground knowing it actually went in.
Graydon gained his second and the last of the goals by making it 3-1 sensationally. The centre-mid took the ball down and struck it on the half volley straight into the top corner giving Newbrook no chance.
The second half consisted of The Star attempting to get back into the game, but the closest they came was hitting the crossbar at the very start of the half.
This season has been hit and miss for Seaham with disappointing form to end what looked like a positive season.
