Seaham’s slow start to the second half cost them against Ashington.

Three second half goals saw Ashington leave with a 4-1 win over Seaham Red Star on Saturday afternoon.

Luke Proctor had equalised for Seaham after former cricketer Ben Harmison put the visitors ahead in the first half.

Ashington regained the lead early in the second half through Dale Pearson and quickly got a third when Andrew Bulford netted 49 minutes in. A fourth was added by Kyle Downey from the spot in added time.

The result means Seaham stay 12th in the Northern League table while Ashington move up to 13th with four games in hand over Red Star.

Ashington started well and would have gone ahead immediately if not for several smart stops from Shaun Newbrook. Paul Antony was the next player to test Newbrook with a decent free kick 11 minutes in, but the dead ball was tipped past the post by Red Star’s long serving keeper.

Eventually, the visitors’ pressure paid off and they took the lead half an hour into the contest. They broke in numbers and when a cross was missed by Bulford, Harmison was unmarked at the back post for a tap in. Ashington’s Bulford may well have got his side a penalty in the build-up but the referee played on, allowing the goal.

The lead didn’t last long though as Proctor made it 1-1 six minutes later. The ball fell to Proctor in the opposition’s penalty area and he made no mistake, smashing the ball past Conor Grant to level the scores going into a goal-filled second half.

Two goals were scored by Ashington in the first five minutes of the restart, the first after Seaham couldn’t deal with a dangerous cross and Pearson converted. Bulford, in a crowded penalty area, converted from a long ball set-piece when he smashed the ball past Newbrook to make it 3-1.

Seaham had reasonable chances to pull one back but couldn’t find a way back into the game before Ashington’s Downey won a penalty for his side in added time. The substitute was fouled by last man Liam Hodgson – who saw red for his challenge – and Downey dispatched his penalty to give Ashington a 4-1 win.

Seaham end their season next Saturday at home to Morpeth Town with a 3pm kick off.
