The two sides are based within minutes of each other.

Sunderland RCA produced a solid second-half display to beat Seaham Red Star 2-0 at the Ferguson Motor Repair Stadium on Saturday.

James Cassidy opened the scoring for RCA in the 62nd minute before the lead was doubled 12 minutes later through Colin Larkin.

Due to this result RCA are now level on points with Seaham, both on 51 points. The Star are 11th in the Northern League and RCA are 12th.

Both sides struggled to break down the opposing teams defence in the first half and no clear-cut chances were created in the opening 20 minutes. The hosts had the first decent opportunity through Andy Johnston, who fired wide with a curling effort when the ball fell to him at the edge of the box in the 21st minute.

Seaham were pressuring RCA very well in the first half and nearly took the lead through Robbie Bird in the 32nd minute. The winger was played in behind the defence by Lynch and he rounded the outrushing RCA keeper, but the angle was too tight for the finish and the ball trickled past the face of the goal.

John Butler had the best opportunity for the visitors in the first half just before half time. The forward cut in from the left wing and rounded two Seaham defenders before firing straight at Shaun Newbrook with the whole goal to aim at.

Sunderland RCA played a much better second half and nearly got the opener minutes after the restart, as Newbrook was forced to tip a header onto the bar before the rebound was blasted over. The Star responded well to that let off with a big chance of their own at the other end, but RCA’s keeper Jon Carmichael denied Bird with a decent save then Liam Hodgson hit the bar after a deflection stopped a certain goal.

Eventually RCA took one of their chances as Cassidy smashed home from the edge of the box. The ball fell to the winger after one of his teammates’ shot was blocked and he made no mistake with his effort to give his side a 1-0 advantage.

The opening goal gave the visitors confidence and they punished The Star again making it 2-0 through Larkin. Newbrook made an impressive save before the ball fell to an unmarked Larkin at the back post who was there to score a tap in sealing all three points for RCA.

Seaham now have two games left this season with the next one being another home fixture, this time hosting Ashington.
