Seaham couldn’t acclimatise to the muddy conditions at Marske.

Seaham Red Star lost for a second time in two weeks after they fell 2-1 at Marske United on Saturday.

Curtis Round opened the scoring for the hosts 35 minutes in before David Palmer equalised for Seaham five minutes later. The winning goal was scored by Butterworth 10 minutes before full time.

After this result Seaham drop a place in the Northern League table to ninth while Marske move up to fifth.

The game started quietly with a lot of interventions, most notably the injury of Red Star midfielder Andrew Johnston who was replaced by Luke Proctor.

Red Star’s best chance in the opening half came when Robbie Bird was played in over the hosts defence, but he was denied by a great tackle from Craig Gott just before he could get his shot away.

Round broke the deadlock for Marske, curling his shot onto the post and in from the edge of Seaham’s area 10 minutes before half time.

But Seaham levelled the score through Palmer who lobbed Marske keeper Robert Dean, showing great composure in a crowded penalty area. The linesman judged the ball to have crossed the line despite protests from Marske players.

The second half began with the pitch getting muddier and bobbly making the game a scrappy affair. Marske acclimatised to the situation better and should have taken the lead through Daniel Earl who scuffed a close range shot wide.

Shaun Newbrook had a busier second half as the home side looked for a second. The keeper was forced to save a dangerous Peter Bulmer shot from 25 yards out tipping the ball past his post.

Earl missed another chance to score, hitting the crossbar from close range with the ball bouncing on the goal line. Eventually Marske scored when the ball fell to Butterworth in a crowded penalty area and he smashed the ball past Newbrook.

Seaham’s next game is a home fixture against Jarrow Roofing next Saturday at the Ferguson Motor Repair Stadium.
