Seaham Red Star lost 4-1 at home to Marske United on Saturday in their Northern League opener.

Robbie Bird opened the scoring for The Star 10 minutes in, only for the visitors to equalise through Glen Butterworth six minutes later. Marske went into half time 2-1 up after Daniel Earl scored in the 28th minute. Earl scored his second and Marske’s third with 72 minutes played before Butterworth also scored his second in injury time.

Red Star went ahead with their first chance of the game in the 10th minute, Craig Lynch flicked the ball out wide to Bird who scored delightfully, the winger drove towards goal and powered a shot into the bottom left corner for a great individual effort.

It didn’t take Marske long to equalise through Butterworth, the midfielder was laid off on the edge of the area and he smashed the ball past Red Star keeper Jordan Harkess. The visitors took the lead in the 28th minute through Earl, the striker couldn’t miss after an inch perfect cross from Craig Gott freed him up at the back post to finish easily.

Marske throughout the game looked dangerous going forward and Harkness had to make a few saves to keep The Star in this game going into the break. Liam McBryde against the run of play nearly levelled for Seaham, if not for a great block from a Marske defender the forward had a tap in.

The second half was dominated by the 2014/15 Northern League winners and they eventually bagged a third goal in the 72nd minute through Earl. The forward dinked the ball over Harkess’ head to put the game to bed. Butterworth showed that Marske hadn’t taken their foot of the gas by adding a forth for his side smashing the ball into the bottom corner.

Next up for Seaham is another home fixture this time against Newton Aycliffe. The game is on August 16.
