Sunderland Ladies claimed a first win of the FA WSL Spring Series campaign on Saturday night with a 1-0 win over Bristol City Women at the Hetton Centre.

Lucy Staniforth’s sole penalty in the 76th minute ensured the Lady Black Cats extended their unbeaten run.

Steph Roche and Abbey Joice led the line for Sunderland with Kiera Ramshaw coming into the side in place of Beverly Leon.

Sunderland started well and could have taken the lead on 10 minutes but Joice stumbled when gifted with a fine chance.

Despite few clear cut chances, Sunderland were playing some positive football and keeping Bristol chances to a bare minimum.

The lively Staniforth was looking Sunderland’s brightest outfit and the former Bristol midfielder forced a fine save from Caitlin Leach in the Bristol goal.

Staniforth went close again a couple of minutes before half-time but this time, the crossbar prevented the 24-year-old.

Despite numerous good chances, Sunderland were unable to find a breakthrough in the first half and the two sides went into the break level.

Joice tested Leach in the Bristol goal only a couple of minutes into the second half while Jodie Brett forcing Sunderland’s Anke Preuss into a save.

Bristol pushed in the second half and looked to punish Sunderland’s missed chances with Claire Emslie and Brett going close to no avail.

The deadlock was finally broken 12 minutes from time when Joice’s teasing run tempted Hayley Ladd into a mistimed challenge giving the referee no option but to point to the spot. Staniforth took responsibility and confidently tucked the ball home despite the best efforts of Leach.

The three points mean Sunderland remain unbeaten in the Spring Series with the Lady Black Cats yet to concede a goal.
