Sunderland FoL Monkwearmouth 1-2 Rochdale AFC North

Sunderland’s FoL Monkwearmouth Scholars suffered their first defeat of the season against Rochdale AFC North, ending their nine-game unbeaten run.

Sunderland went one down in the first-half but quickly replied through Jak Hanson before losing the game due to a poorly defended corner in the final few minutes.

Rochdale opened the scoring in the 29th minute after a good team move allowed them the space to fire a shot past keeper Ross Cunningham.

The Dale’s goal forced Jamie Chandler into bringing Jak Hanson on from the bench, who had an instant impact, getting the equaliser with a shot from the edge of the box 32 minutes in.

The rest of the first-half was an intense battle with good chances and strong challenges from both teams.

The second-half saw more of the same with chances for both sides, including a Rochdale forward hitting the bar from a long distance free kick in the 57th minute.

Both teams grew frustrated and the Black Cats captain Aaron Duell came close to finding the winning goal in the 74th minute, after a long-range strike hit the inside of the post.

The winning goal came in the 83rd minute after Sunderland failed to defend a Rochdale corner and the ball found its way in the back of the net to make it 2-1.

Head Coach Chandler was disappointed with the loss, saying: “We deserved to lose, Rochdale were the better team.” But was keen to highlight how proud he was of his teams unbeaten run.

“As disappointing as it is we’ve had 10 games this season and only lost one.”

The Red and Whites remain top of the NFYL Midlands Division but a victory for 2nd place Rochdale saw them close the gap to two points.
