Sunderland’s Monkwearmouth Scholars recorded back-to-back clean sheets in a comfortable 4-0 victory over North East rivals Berwick.

Arron Thompson opened the scoring from the spot, before Leon McKeith and Josh King ensured Sunderland were 3-0 up before the break.

Harry Thompson scored the fourth with a penalty with seconds remaining in a closely matched second half.

Sunderland raced out the blocks with Aaron Duell hitting the crossbar seconds before Jak Hanson was felled in the box to win his side a penalty.

Arron Thompson stepped up and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper with ten minutes on the clock.

Three minutes later Sunderland doubled their lead from a corner, Arron Thompson turning provider for McKeith whose header sailed in from the centre of the box.

Another set-piece saw Sunderland score for the third time. Duell’s freekick was flicked onto the back post and headed home by King.

Sunderland struggled to find their rhythm in the second half and relied on two good saves from goalkeeper Ross Cunningham to keep their three-goal lead intact.

The pressure was eased on the cusp of full-time following another penalty, Harry Thompson fired the ball down the centre of the goal to score Sunderland’s fourth.

Scholar’s head coach Jamie Chandler said he was “delighted” with his side’s performance and another clean sheet, but admitted they found it difficult in the second half.
