Sunderland have struggled to field six players on a number of occasions this season.

The University of Sunderland mixed golf team face Durham 3rds this Wednesday in their final game of the BUCS Northern 2B league.

Durham 3rds take up fifth spot in the table, while Sunderland’s golfers could move up to sixth with a win in their final game.

Durham come into the game after suffering a 2.5-3.5 cup defeat to Liverpool 1sts who are three divisions above them, and president Josh Carr thinks it will be “a tough ask” to conjure up a result on Wednesday.

Carr said: “I think it’s going to be another tough week for us, it’s not looking like we’re going to get a full team and I know Will (Herron) has a few injury concerns.

“It’s disappointing with it being our last game we can’t get all the lads together, because it’s a game we could have won and moved up the table.

“I think whatever happens tomorrow though we can still be proud of our efforts this season.”

With this being Sunderland’s last game, Carr was still adamant that the squad would still stay together until the summer but unsure about next years prospects.

“The team will still be continuing the coaching on Tuesday nights and some Wednesdays, which is great for us.

“I know a lot of the lads are really keen to improve their games for the summer club competitions, and we’ll be organising a few other things so we all keep in touch.

“Gary (Shipley, coach) has been great with us this season, and is still really keen to keep the coaching with us going.”

The golfers will travel to Brancepeth Castle Golf Club to play this fixture, with the first tee off time at 10.00am, Wednesday 15 March.
