Men’s tennis were one of the success stories of Sunderland’s Clash of the Minsters.

Sunderland claimed three of four wins in the singles followed by victories in both doubles matches against York St John to seal the points at Clash of the Minsters on Wednesday.

Andrew Waddell kicked Sunderland off with a battling win, eventually coming through 10-7 in a tiebreak, while Paddy Horne defeated his opponent in a close encounter. Horne broke his opponent’s serve in the fourth game of the first set before he gifted a break back to the York St John’s player in the seventh game.

Horne then crucially broke his opponent for a second time in the 12th game to win the set 7-5 as a tiebreak loomed. However, the second set started poorly for the Sunderland man who was broken in the first game. Despite being behind for the first three games of the second set, Horne battled his way through to a 6-4 victory to give him a straight sets win.

Phil Rudd found himself involved in an extended battle where there wasn’t much give in the first set. Both players were comfortably holding serve until the 12th game when Rudd was forced to save a set point. However, Rudd couldn’t ultimately keep the set from his opponent who came through to win 7-4 in a first set tiebreak.

Breaks of serve were a lot more frequent in the second set with both players breaking each other in quick succession. A second York St John’s break proved crucial though as he came through to win 6-2 with a double fault gifting him the match.

Joseph Nicholson made quick work of his opponent to claim a comfortable win to give Sunderland the advantage after the four singles matches.

More success followed for Sunderland in the doubles as both matches ended in tight victories after both matches went to a tie-break. The partnership of Phil Rudd and Andrew Waddell came through a tough tie against a talented York St John’s pair to win 11-9 in the deciding tie-break. In the other match, Paddy Horne and Joseph Nicholson also showed great character to win their deciding tie-break 11-9 too.

Overall, it was a big success for Sunderland who can hopefully look forward to a good season in the BUCS League.
