The University of Sunderland men’s volleyball team will be hoping Christmas comes early with a win against local rivals Newcastle this afternoon.
A disappointing season so far sees the men’s team desperate for a win before Christmas, however it won’t be easy playing against a strong Newcastle side.
“Not only do we want a win, but it’s a win against Newcastle. It means so much more against your biggest rivals,” said Team Captain, Mark Whitelaw.
“We’ve had a tough season a win now would boost everyone’s confidence to much.”
The two teams have had a controversial history. Last years fixture saw them meet a second time for a rematch following a disagreement in the refereeing decision.
The Tynesiders are currently sitting in 2nd place in the BUCS table; therefore this struggling Sunderland side may struggle to beat one of the league’s heavyweights.
“Obviously we want to win, but if we go there and take a set off them I’d be happy,” Whitelaw continued.
