University of Sunderland men won an important point in their bid to avoid relegation after drawing away to table-toppers Hull.

After gaining a walkover win last week against Teesside, Sunderland looked to carry on their momentum when travelling to Humberside.

Konstantinos Avelos played out an entertaining match with his opponent, eventually coming through 6-3 4-6 7-6 (10-7). Andrew Waddell also played a long, gruelling match, but came through a 4-6 6-7 7-6 (10-8) winner.

Sunderland captain Phil Rudd lost his singles match 6-4 6-3 in a very tight match that was decided on a few points, while Paddy Horne lost his match convincingly 6-1 6-3, though he has had a great season for the University’s tennis team.

It was level going into the doubles matches. Avelos and Waddell kept up their high levels of performance, winning 6-2 6-2. However, another close match involving Rudd went the way of Hull. A 6-4 6-4 win for the home side meant the points were shared.
