University of Sunderland men’s tennis president Paddy Horne believes the 1st team can claim their first win of the season when they travel to Teesside on November 29.

Teesside 1sts are also yet to win this season and the fixture will see the BUCS Northern 4B tennis league’s bottom two sides face off.

Horne said: “We can beat them. I think it’s going to be between Teesside, Hull and us (Sunderland) for relegation.

“We drew with Hull and hopefully we can beat Teesside.”

Sunderland are coming off the back of a home defeat to 1st placed Leeds Beckett and Horne thought it was always going to be a tough game.

“They (Leeds) are the best team in the league. It doesn’t help when you only have three players either.

“We are missing three players who would usually be in the team and we haven’t had all our players available yet this season,” Horne added.

Despite the defeat, Sunderland are now three points clear of Teesside who were forced to withdraw from their game on Wednesday.

Teesside are bottom on minus two points after being unable to field a team against Sheffield Hallam 2nds, making the fixture against Sunderland even more important.
