University of Sunderland men’s rugby team are hoping to hit the ground running as they travel to Huddersfield for their first BUCS clash of the year.
The start of this season mirrors the last as Huddersfield were Sunderland’s first opponents in the league this time last year.
And the result left a lot to be desired for the travelling side with Sunderland falling to a 68-0 loss.
But the men’s 1sts will not let history be repeated and are heading into the game with full confidence.
Looking to the match, captain Huysein Yilmaz is confident that Sunderland can steal the victory on the day.
“We want to get out a strong side and get a big win. It’s the first BUCS game and we need to make a good start in this league.”
Despite losing their Clash of the Minsters test to York St John last week, Sunderland put in a strong performance against the side three divisions above them.
York took the lead early on in the game when they broke away down the left wing and outpaced the Sunderland defence.
But the Wearsiders responded quickly with Daniel Gray pulling back a try for the hosts following a good set of phases from the forwards.
However, York St John managed to score three more tries before half time and picked up where they left off in the second half to take home the points.
With Clash of the Minsters behind them, there is no reason why Sunderland 1st cannot go out and claim their first victory of the season.
