University of Sunderland athlete Damian Shorten admitted he didn’t do as well as he would have liked at the BUCS Outdoor Championships, despite reaching the high jump final.
Shorten equaled his personal best of 1.95m at the Indoor Championships earlier this year, but only managed to clear 1.85m in the Outdoor final.
“I didn’t do too well. The conditions were a bit dodgy and it was made a straight final so that affected me,” he said.
“When you’re waiting for 30 people to jump, you lose focus.”
The Sunderland jumper was one of four athletes competing last weekend in Bedford from the University of Sunderland.
But now Shorten is looking forward to the future as he combines his high jump training with trying to get into the Navy.
“I’ve been doing a lot of kick-boxing as it’s really good for cardio. It helps with high jump and it also really helps with fitness for Officer training for the Navy,” he said.
