The University of Sunderland Equestrian club will be looking to gain bragging rights over local rivals Teesside University when they meet in the Tees-Wear Varsity event later today.
The venue for this battle of local rivals is the Penshaw Equestrian Centre.
Equestrian is not one of the more publicised sports so here’s a short introduction to the sport.
Equestrian is a sport where riders take it in turns to complete a discipline on their horse. Riders will do both the dressage and the show jumping, with a combined score giving them their final result.
The dressage involves the riders of each team taking their horse through a series of predetermined movements. They are then given a score out of ten for the movements.
The show jumping section of the event sees the riders of the teams going through a course made up of fences which can be easily knocked down if hit. They are then marked on how well they complete the different parts of the course.
Penalties will be given for knocking down a fence, running round it, or the horse refusing to complete an obstacle. If at any point the rider falls they will be eliminated from that discipline.
