The Beacon of Light will be the new base of the Foundation of Light, and will provide members of the community with brand new opportunities.
The Beacon will allow the Foundation to do more of what they do already in Sunderland, with several football pitches, a school and several opportunities to play different sports.
Established in 2001 by former Sunderland AFC chairman Sir Bob Murray CBE, the Foundation of Light aims to use the power of football to change the lives of children, young people and their families.
Speaking with the managing director, Jaime Wright: “The beacon will give a home for staff, and provide more of what we do in the community. More sports, more education and more opportunities for young people and adults.”
“The Foundation needs a home. We’ve been at the Stadium (of Light) for the 15 years that we’ve been running but we’ve run out of space.”
Situated next to the Aquatic Centre and the Stadium of Light, the beacon will be adding to a sporting hub in Sunderland: “It will be an iconic spot in Sunderland.”
The foundation of light has no age limits, including a 95 year old participant:
“it’ll be a building for everybody.”
“The beacon will be a part of the community It’ll be a facility that everybody can access. Whether its your first participation in sport or at a higher level.” Jamie said.
