Kingston Park is home to Newcastle’s League and Union teams.

Newcastle Thunder take on North Wales Crusaders in the League 1 Cup quarter-final at Kingston Park this Sunday, with both sides eager to take one step closer to Blackpool.

Thunder beat Hunslet RLFC to get to this stage while Crusaders dispatched of York City Knights in a nail-biting contest which saw the Welsh side triumph 17-16.

In the league campaign, Newcastle have won three from three while North Wales sit 13th in the 16-team league, with just one victory to their name.

Last time out, Newcastle beat South Wales Ironmen 26-20 at The Wern with Benn Hardcastle’s 100 per cent goal record proving vital. Mick Mantelli’s side had to come from 20-12 down at half-time to beat the Ironmen, who proved tough opposition for the in-form North East outfit.

Vincent Rennie, Dan Parker, Tyler Craig and Derrell Olpherts all crossed the whitewash for Newcastle, with two tries being scored in either half. Keeping South Wales scoreless in the second half was a massive factor in Newcastle coming out on top and Mantelli will be hoping for more of the same from his players when Crusaders come to Kingston Park on Sunday.

Meanwhile, North Wales registered their first win of the season when they beat York 26-22 at Bootham Crescent. Mike Grady’s men didn’t take the lead until the 66th minute and they didn’t look back from there on as Ryan Smith’s go-ahead try was improved on when Dale Bloomfield touched down.

Bloomfield is part of an impressive outside back division which includes Corey Lee and Callum Mulkeen, the latter being an Irish international. Full-back Tommy Johnson is also one to watch as he is capable in the air and has a good knack of breaking the line and setting up dangerous attacks.

Their current league position certainly doesn’t do their squad justice and they will certainly be wanting to lay down a marker on Sunday when they take on Newcastle.

The other quarter-final ties are Gloucestershire All Golds v Workington Town, Oxford v London Skolars and Barrow Raiders v Keighley Cougars.
