The University of Sunderland’s men’s Volleyball team face Durham 2nds at CitySpace tonight in a bid to reach the next round of the Northern Conference Cup.

Sunderland cruised to a 3-0 victory over Lancaster in their latest Northern 2B division, their second league win of the season, to take them to fourth in the table.

Tonight’s opponents, Durham 2nds, currently sit top of the Northern 3B league. Durham look certain to win promotion this year having won all five of their league fixtures so far.

Sunderland’s captain, Georgios Tsagakis, admitted that the cup match will give his side an extra incentive tonight. With the side comfortably mid-table in the league, the Northern Conference Cup is the only competition left to potentially win.

“To be honest, I’m not that happy (with Sunderland’s start to the season). We had higher targets,” said Tsagakis.

“The focus moves to the cup and we’re looking forward to it.

“We always want to carry on and beat the next team we play, but for the cup game we’re going to give everything.

“It’s the only thing left that we can win. We can’t compete for the BUCS League anymore unless the other teams suffer bad losses, which I don’t think they will.”

It will be a tough ask for Sunderland to go all the way and lift this year’s trophy, but with a similar performance to last week, Sunderland will have a strong chance of making the next round at the least.

Tonight’s game starts at 7PM at CitySpace.
