Sunderland 1sts were up against tough opposition.

University of Sunderland netball captain Shantelle Goulding has praised her sides communication during their 45-30 loss to Manchester on Wednesday but admits fitness is an issue that needs to be worked on for the next match.

The result means Sunderland are out of the Northern Conference Cup in the round of 64, but Goulding took heart from the team’s performance against the side top of the Northern 3A division.

“I think we did well today,” she said. “The talking in the team and communication was very good, shooting was spot on and overall we showed them how well we really can play.

“Fitness is the only thing we can improve on from today, the communication is great.”

Manchester began the match the stronger of the two teams and raced into an early lead, heading into the break at the end of the first quarter with a 13-3 lead.

Things evened out in the next two quarters as Sunderland picked up their game and staged a slight comeback.

However, fatigue seemed to set in at the end of every quarter ultimately costing them vital points, eventually falling to a 45-30 loss.

Ellie Pogson commented: “We performed well and brought it back today. We’ve got different players from different teams so we’ve just started as a team together so well done today to everyone.”

Sunderland’s next fixture sees them return to BUCS Northern 4B action as they take on Leeds 4ths on November 2 at City Space.
