Sunderland West End were held to a goalless draw by Windscale at the Ford Quarry Complex in the Wearside League on Saturday.

Both sides came close to scoring, with efforts cleared off the line and going just the wrong side of the post, but neither could break the deadlock. westendbadge

West End were hoping to get back on winning terms having lost in midweek, and it was the home side who got off to the brighter start.

The first chance fell to Sunderland in the fourth minute as Layton Chapman found space and shot from outside the box, but his effort drifted wide.

Three minutes later Windscale had a good chance of their own, but Laurie Black’s shot was dragged across the face of goal.

West End should have taken the lead from a ninth-minute corner, but Brad Forster’s header went narrowly over the bar. The Cumbrians went straight up the other end and should have gone in front, but Jordan Livingstone’s effort was cleared off the line by Callum Hodgson.

The rest of the half belonged to West End, but despite numerous efforts, Bryan Miller was rarely troubled in the Windscale goal.

Kyle Young produced an effort from outside the box on 16 minutes, but his shot went harmlessly over the bar. Chapman had another chance to put the home side in front, but he couldn’t find the target with his header in the 22nd minute.

Matthew Halliday then worked his way into the box, but his shot from the left went over the bar, and Mark Catcheside saw an effort flash across the face of goal a minute later.

Halliday produced his side’s first effort on target in the 28th minute, but a tame effort was easily dealt with by Miller.
In the 35th minute Jordan Cook played a defence-splitting pass, putting Halliday one on one with the keeper, only to prod the ball the wrong side of the post.

Two minutes later, Catcheside played a dangerous ball into the box, but Forster again was unable to find the target with a header.

Jesse Cutter’s 41st-minute shot from long range was deflected wide by Darren Donald, but Hodgson was unable to guide his effort on target from the resulting corner.

Windscale created the first chance of the second half, but Daniel Morgan’s 47th minute shot went high and wide. Halliday could have scored in the 49th minute, but his effort was off target.

At the other end Stephen Walker had a chance to put the visitors ahead, but his flick went harmlessly over the bar. West End substitute Barry Turton was causing problems for Windscale, but his header in the 52nd minute was saved.

Moments later Halliday had an effort saved and Hodgson looked to have stabbed a rebound home, but Windscale somehow bundled the ball away.

Chapman and Catcheside both tried their luck from 20 yards out, but both efforts went wide of Miller’s goal.

On the hour Windscale should have taken the lead. Michael Farrer burst through the West End defence and slid the ball past Nial Thubron, but the shot went just wide. Livingstone then tried an effort from range, but was unable to test the keeper.

In the 70th minute Hodgson had the chance to break the deadlock, but his header from six yards out went just over the bar. The game was now more open and Dean Fox had a good chance for Windscale, but his shot was straight at Thubron.

West End should have taken the lead in the 78th minute. Chapman released Turton on the left, who broke into the box before firing low and hard, but was denied by a good save from Miller.

Turton looked to have scored with the rebound, but was denied by Walker on the line who turned the ball away for a corner. The corner found Turton at the far post, but he stabbed his effort just wide.

At the other end Windscale almost went in front, but Livingstone’s header went just wide of Thubron’s post. Farrer then could have put the visitors ahead with just ten minutes to play, but he blasted over from 25 yards.

West End again came close to taking the points. In the 85th minute Turton saw a shot saved on the line, before Chapman had an effort blocked on the line.

There was still time for one last chance, but Stephen Lax fired wide from the edge of the box in the last minute of the game to see the match finish level.
