University of Sunderland women’s basketball team are hoping to turn their season around in 2017 after they ended the year with a losing record.
“This year we are 1-2 and hope to finish 3-2 at the end of the season,” explained Charlene Sambrooks, president of the women’s basketball team. The side lost their first two games of the year, including a 57-54 defeat to York St John at the Clash Of The Minsters season opener.
They went on to lose two games in the second half of 2016, including a heart breaking five point loss against York in their final matchup of the year. “It was not what we were hoping for but has made us even more determined to win our next and last two games of this season and finishing on a high,” explained Sambrooks.
Despite these defeats, the team’s highlight of the season so far was their “amazing” win against Sheffield.
“Winning against Sheffield was amazing, we brought a full bench with us and made sure to use it. It was a great experience for our new team members to get used to playing with the old members.”
The focus for the girls now is on 2017, where they have two remaining games, and the president of the team still believes they can improve this season. Their next outing is away to Huddersfield 1sts on February 1.
