York St John won all three Netball fixtures at this year’s Clash of the Minsters

University of Sunderland suffered defeat in the Clash of the Minsters as York St John were crowned 18-8 winners.

The annual curtain-raiser to the university sporting year took place in York with both universities competing across 26 sports and it was the home side who comfortably won in the end.

Sunderland had started the day well with a 3-2 win in the Rowing competition and an early 9-4 win in the women’s Futsal fixture, but York soon asserted their dominance.

First the home university scored a white-wash of victories on the Badminton courts, with the men’s 1st and 2nd teams and the women’s team all winning 8-0.

And that was quickly followed by three wins out of three in the Netball fixtures.

Sunderland did manage to earn impressive wins in Swimming, Ultimate Frisbee, men’s Volleyball, American Football and men’s Football 2nds, but despite their best efforts it was all in vain in the end as York hit back strongly as the afternoons action unfolded.

The York men’s Rugby team recorded one of the days stand out scores, beating their Wearside counterparts 71-0 and that was closely followed by a 68-46 win in the women’s Basketball game.

Sunderland didn’t give up the fight though and convincingly won the men’s Basketball fixture 103-23, but sadly for the away side it was a case of too little too late.

As the final results came in with York winning the women’s Volleyball 3-0 and the Snowspnorts competition 3-2, all that was left to do was confirm the results and hand out the trophy.

The presentation took place in front of a raucous crowd of both teams, with the trophy staying in York.

Sunderland fought valiantly throughout the day but in the end York’s extra preparation took them over the line to victory with the overall score 68-16 – York winning 18 events to Sunderland’s eight.

The Wearsiders were left to head back up the A19 empty-handed, with thoughts now turning to the start of the BUCS season.
