Sunderland FoL Scholars 4-2 Oxford United Academy (AET)

Jamie Chandlers’ Monkwearmouth Scholars progressed to round three of the NYFL Trophy scoring three goals in extra-time.

The Black Cats avoided a second-round exit with goals from Max Sansom, Arron Thompson, Max Nelson and Harry Johnson.

Head coach Jamie Chandler said: “I thought it was our toughest game so far but the boys dug deep for each other and showed great character.

“We should have been out of sight but missed a lot of chances and, in football, if you don’t take them you get punished.

“Overall, I’m very proud of how they stuck together and brought their team spirit through.”

With the game finishing 1-1 after full-time, Chandler added: “To see them give me and their teammates every last ounce of energy they had was superb.

“It meant the world to them to dig in and get through.

“It was a real squad effort and the celebrations showed that the spirit we have is something we are all very proud of.”

Chandler feels his group of players will relish the opportunity to win another cup competition after their NYFL League Cup triumph in May

He said: “Last year was a special year.

“What they’ve done so far this season, winning nine games from nine in all competitions is a great platform for the rest of the season.

“The targets set from the players this year show they are just as hungry to go out and do it all over again.

“With that comes a nice pressure and part of their development is having challenges and knowing how to perform every week with that on their shoulders.”

The Black Cats will now go on to face Rochdale AFC North in the third round.
