Sunderland Men’s Volleyball claimed a comfortable straight sets win against York St. John in the Clash of the Minsters volleyball at CitySpace, Sunderland.
The home side made a strong start to the match, taking a 16-6 lead in the first set. St. John improved but couldn’t prevent Sunderland from taking it 25-14.

Sunderland then raced to an 8-0 lead in the second set before going on to win it by a one-sided 25-9 score-line to take a 2-0 sets lead.

The hosts’ mix of power and touch to finish points and ability to exploit space in between the St. John’s front and back row proved crucial in their early dominance.

The third set was a tighter affair, with neither side having more than a two-point advantage until Sunderland took a 12-9 lead.

Sunderland took control of the set from there and St. John called a timeout when trailing 13-19 in a final attempt to make a comeback.

It would not stop Sunderland’s momentum, though, as they took the set 25-18 to win the match by a 3-0 score-line in sets.

The Wearside outfit start their league campaign on Wednesday, October 10 at home to Sheffield Hallam in the BUCS Volleyball Northern 2B league.

The win completed a Clash of the Minsters volleyball double for Team Sunderland as the women’s side also won their match.
