Sunderland’s Stefan Schwarz comes on for the last few minutes after a long injury lay-off to replace Alex Rae

It’s only five sleeps ’til Christmas and the excitement is spreading round Sunderland! The mince pies are selling left right and centre and the carrots are getting prepared for the reindeer, and they better be as well have you seen the McDonald’s advert we’re making Rudolph sad guys it’s not on! Anyway back to football and we look at a Swedish star who lit up the Stadium of Light (didn’t even mean that one).

Stefan Schwarz

Duration at SAFC: 1999-2003

Signed From: Valencia (£4 million)

Sold to: N/A (Retired)

Appearances: 68

Goals: 3

Key Moment: The midfielder scored a stunning volley against his ex-side Arsenal in 2001 in a 1-1 draw with the Gunners.

Interesting Fact: In his Sunderland contract there was a ‘space clause’ which stated that if Schwarz was to end up in space then his contract would become invalid. I- I have no idea why this is a thing I am very confused at this moment in time.

Where is he now? Schwarz was interested in the vacant manager’s job at Sunderland following David Moyes’ dismissal and prior to the appointment of Simon Grayson but now works as a pundit for Benfica TV.
