Leeds United’s Jonathan Woodgate (l) battles with Sunderland’s George McCartney (r)

It’s Christmas Eve! It’s the most exciting time of the year as everything special that comes with the big day is only fingertips away. Unfortunately though this does mean that this is the last edition of the Sunderland advent calendar *insert sad crowd noise* but we’re going out swinging as we look at a player who shares the first name and a last name of different Beatles! So, come together now as we twist and shout our way to the end of the long and winding road which has been the Sunderland advent calendar.

George McCartney

Duration at SAFC: 1998-2006 & 2008-2012

Signed From: N/A

Sold to: West Ham (£600k + Clive Clarke) & West Ham (Free) This has gotten confusing I know.

Appearances: 183

Goals: 0 (Got 6 assists though)

Key Moment: The Northern Irishman was made captain in the 2003-04 season and the following campaign he was named Fan’s Player of the Season as Sunderland won the Championship.

Interesting Fact: When returning for his second spell at West Ham he said he had no contact with Sunderland manager at the time Martin O’Neill and it was already decided his contract would not be renewed.

Where is he now? McCartney has been retired since 2014 after a successful but injury plagued career.

Merry Christmas to everyone who has taken the time to read my drivel over the past month, thank you!
