Defeat against Teesside at the weekend meant Sunderland Men’s Futsal 1st’s are unable to win the league after a very closely fought battle at the top of the league.

Heading into the final fixtures of the round-robin tournaments next week Sunderland were hoping to still be in the mix for a title.

However, a 5-1 defeat to the league leaders ensured their title hopes were all but over as Teesside and York St John will battle for the title next weekend.

Sunderland were unfortunate to lose the lead against a very good and well drilled Teesside team and it proved costly as the Wearsiders struggled to find a way to pass the Teesside defence.

Sunderland 2nd’s didn’t have a much better time on their visit to York St John as they were beaten 11-4 by the hosts.

Victory over York St John would have helped out the 1st team in their battle for the title, however, it was not meant to be as they were also beaten by York in a close game ending 5-3.

Later that day the two-title hopeful’s, Teesside and York St John’s, came against each other and if Teesside won they would have won the league.

However, a last-minute goal from the hosts meant the title deciding weekend must wait another week after Teesside were defeated 2-1.

Sunderland 1st’s player, Jamie Myers, commented: “We are all disappointed by the result but we will improve for next year to make sure we win the league.”

Sunderland will visit York St John’s again next weekend as the 1st’s will play the host’s in an attempt to stop them winning the league whilst the 2nd’s will hope to do better against York before playing each other in the final game of the season.
