Germany go home at the group stage at the 2018 World Cup with only one win and three points.

Sweden go through as group winners with Mexico, both with two wins and a loss.

Mexico 0-3 Sweden

Mexico looked so comfortable in Group F with six points from two games.

However, a heavy defeat to Sweden left their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

Ludwig Augustinsson gave Sweden a 50th minute lead when a scuffed shot fell into his path to fire in with his left foot.

Captain Andreas Granqvist fired a fantastic penalty into the top right after Hector Moreno brought down Marcus Berg in the box.

Edson Alvarez put the ball in his own net in the 74th minute when a failed clearance turned the ball past his own ‘keeper.

Sweden needed a result following a last minute defeat to Germany, however with the emphatic performance it was Mexico who were left nervous.

As a result of the hit to their goal difference, a one goal win for Germany would put them out.

South Korea 2-0 Germany

South Korea left it late to break Germany hearts, sending them home from Russia.

Germany lost to Mexico in their opening game, but a last minute win against Sweden kept their World Cup hopes alive.

Needing a result, the reigning champions controlled most of the game against South Korea.

But it wasn’t until the second half they created any good chances.

Joshua Kimmich was getting dangerous crosses into the box, but none were converted.

It was down to Kim Young-gwon to confirm Germany’s exit in the 92nd minute from close range, following mistakes clearing a corner in the German defence.

Manuel Neuer was dispossessed high up the pitch, Son Heung-min latched on the end of a long ball to tap home in the 96th minute.

Group F has had some great drama, shock wins, late goals and now the defending champions exiting in the first round.

Among the players that have caught the eye in Group F are South Korea’s goalkeeper Cho Hyun-woo put in great performances against Sweden and Germany.

Hirving Lozano has looked a constant threat for Mexico and would have been the man of the group had he not often been brought off early.

Emil Forsberg was expected to be Sweden’s talisman, however Viktor Claesson has often looked their main creator.
