Georgia Gibson’s goal secured victory for the Lady Black Cats

Sunderland took all three points in their final away game of the 2018/19 season, despite a shortage of numbers and a red card.

Keira Ramshaw put the hosts into the lead in the 34th minute, before Georgia Gibson found the top corner to double the lead 67 minutes in.

Monika Estere-Stube pulled one back for Guiseley in the 69th minute before Ramshaw was sent off in the 73rd. Despite the player advantage, Guiseley couldn’t find a way through the resolute Sunderland defence and the visitors held on.

Sunderland travelled with only 11 fit players, with a number of players missing through injury, work and other commitments. Amelia Kemp was back in the squad for the first time since March 17, while Courtney Stewart started her first game since the opening day of the season.

Despite the limited numbers, Sunderland dominated the ball in the early exchanges. Ramshaw and Niamh McLaughlin each tested ‘keeper Bethan Davies, however, the visitors would find a breakthrough after 34 minutes.

Kemp started the move with a great challenge in the Sunderland half. The ball ran for Lambert, who picked out her captain with a through ball. Ramshaw finished the move, finding the bottom corner with a strike across goal.

An unbelievable strike from Gibson doubled the advantage after 67 minutes. The midfielder picked up possession on the halfway line, before beating Alarna Fuller and curling the ball into the top corner.

A free-kick routine saw Guiseley Vixens pull a goal back two minutes later. Estere-Stube finished off Charlotte Gill’s cross at the near post.

Things would get tougher for Sunderland in the 73rd minute, as captain Ramshaw saw red after retaliating to a foul.

Sunderland held firm despite the lack of their captain to take home all three points from their final away game.
