The University of Sunderland mixed golf team captain Will Herron is “looking forward” to his side’s Northern 2B league match against the University of York 2nds, at Wearside Golf Club this week.

This will be the Sunderland golf team’s first home game of the season and is set up to be tightly contested match.

Herron said: “I’m looking forward to it. It’s definitely a winnable game.

“I was a bit disappointed in the first game that we couldn’t get a full team out, but hopefully if we can get our strongest team out then we could win the game.”

However, fielding their strongest six is Sunderland’s downfall at the moment. They were only able to field five players for their first match against Newcastle 2nds.

It looks to be another struggle for Herron this week, as he looks to find a strong starting line up.

Herron said: “Shane (O’Donovan) told us he can’t play due to certain reasons.

“But even without Shane, if Kev (Moran) can play and we can get the rest of the lads playing, I think we’ve still got a really good chance of winning the game.”

The Sunderland golfers will be looking to take advantage of their weekly coaching sessions with team coach Gary Shipley at George Washington Golf Club, as they look to pick up their first win of the season.

Herron said: “I think everyone’s games are coming along really well.

“A lot of the new lads seem to be taken in what Gary’s talking about and the team members who are playing next week seem to be doing really well.”

Sunderland currently sit bottom of the Northern 2B league but have three games in hand on most the others in the league.

A win against 4th place York 2nds could see Sunderland’s golfers leapfrog them in the table.

The first tee off time is at 10.30am at Wearside Golf Club, Wednesday 16 November.
