Sunderland RCA came from behind to clinch a draw against Dunston UTS FC in the Northern League Division One last Tuesday night – a result manager Martin Swales believes shows how far his team have come.

Liam Thear drew first blood for the visitors early in the first-half with a sublime effort from distance.

Sunderland RCA responded well in the second half and Michael Charlton fired in a well-deserved equaliser.

RCA came into the fixture looking for back-to-back wins following a dramatic 4-3 win away to Guisborough Town last Saturday as Martin Swales’ side look to strengthen their top position in the top half of the table.

A frantic first four minutes saw Thear let rip for Dunston with a 25-yard screamer. RCA responded well and were unlucky not to score, Reece Noble hitting the bar in the 15th minute.

RCA manager Martin Swales said: “After the game I think we were a lot stronger and quicker than Dunston and I believe we should have had at least one penalty awarded our way”.

James Cassidy piled the pressure on Dunston with a 67th minute with a strike flying just wide of Niall Harrison’s as RCA confidence grew.

RCA finally broke through the Dunston defence in the 71th minute as right-winger Charlton scored with a low left-footed shot, a deserved equaliser for Swales’ hard-working side.

Three minutes later Dunston were presented with a golden opportunity to retake the lead, striker Mark Fitzpatrick pounced on a defensive mix-up but was thwarted by the recovering Neal Bussey.

RCA hit the woodwork again through a Luke Page strike from distance in the last meaningful action of the second-half.

Both teams had chances to win it towards the end but ended with a share of the spoils.

Following the final whistle Swales stated: “It just shows how far how far RCA have come on when we are disappointed with a draw against a a really good Dunston side.

“My two central midfielders bossed their three so we’re pleased but a little disappointed not to get the win.”

Sunderland RCA travel to Jarrow Roofing BCA this weekend, with kick off at 3PM on tomorrow.
