Sunderland 2nds coach Matty Lyons has praised his side’s performances throughout the season despite finishing bottom of the Northern 5B league.

The Wearsiders collected five points from a possible 30 during their campaign and ended up finishing two points adrift of York 3rds.

Despite their relegation, the Sunderland 2nds boss was full of praise for his side.

“We didn’t deserve to be relegated this season,” said Lyons.

“We’ve had some fantastic performances over the campaign, for example in our 2-0 defeat to York, we didn’t deserve to be on the losing side in that game.”

Sunderland started their season off strongly with a 2-1 win over Teesside. The Wearsiders failed to build on that result and only collected two points in the remaining fixtures.

“We never lost by a wide margin, though I think we could have played better in some games.

“Some of our players had to play for other university teams in last minute decisions. This resulted in a couple of players making mistakes, but that’s not their fault as they were not up to standard.”
