Sunderland Uni 1st side won this years Clash of the Minsters basketball tie again this year 117-54 at City Space, City Campus.

I caught up with Sunderland coach Brian Calder immediately after his side’s victory and this is what he had to say.

The basketball coach said: “We’ve got a win there it’s a good start but I think the league will be our big test, the other local sides have decent teams and Newcastle are in our league”

Justice Seseglis was his coach’s man of the match after a great game at centre, Calder said this about his team captain: “Justice is going to be a massive influence to us, he does a lot of unforeseen things for a coach, he’s the calming influence and been with us for three years.

Calder believes his “team is stronger, no disrespect to last years group” after being asked why he thinks this years side won more convincingly than last years 80-78 match against York St John’s.

Sunderland manager Brian Calder giving a team talk to his players.

He explained this by saying: “There’s been a transition over the last few years, we had a successful team graduate last year, this year we have a new team, a lot of athletic lads who want to play basketball”

Next Wednesday is Sunderland’s first game of the new season taking on University of Leeds 2nds at 7pm. The game takes place at City Space on Campus here in Sunderland.
