Sunderland 1sts were up against tough opposition.

The netball 2nds are fourth after winning three out of six matches.

Mildred Christianne has expressed her excitement at being named the new captain of the University of Sunderland 2nds netball team.

The 20-year-old was among a list of people for a re-vote to take over the captaincy from Rosie Bradley ahead of 2017.

“It was really unexpected as I didn’t see this coming,” said Christianne, who plays centre for the netball team.

“I am really happy and can’t thank the team enough for voting me as captain.”

The Wearsiders have four fixtures left this season and the new captain claims she will do her best to help the team.

She said: “I want to do my best as captain for the players. This means making the right decisions during matches and listening to what the other players say for the team.

“I would also like to be there for my team, not just as captain but as a friend off the court when needed. I’m really happy with the squad and look forward to the upcoming matches.”

Christianne will captain her side when they return to action after the winter break against University of Hull on Wednesday, February 1.
