Sunderland University Netball 3rd’s put on a dominant performance to beat Teesside University 3rd’s 25-16 for their first win of the season early Wednesday afternoon.

A week after Sunderland’s narrow defeat to the University of Bradford 2nd’s, Sunderland easily defeated Teesside University with the Team’s goal attack Rosie Dawson putting on an outstanding performance.

From the start Sunderland looked strong, taking a two-nil lead within four minutes in the first quarter. Whenever Teesside pulled a point back, Sunderland replied almost immediately to regain or improve their lead.

The second quarter was more of the same from the off until Teesside started to block more passes and play became more contested. Sunderland had a scare on their hands when goalkeeper Ebony Lyall was caught all the way out at the edge of the defensive third, luckily Teesside could make nothing of it.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Sunderland’s lead had been cut to 13-12, but Teesside’s strong start to the quarter could not produce more of the same and the home side took complete control of the game and took a seven-point lead by the end of the third quarter.

Sunderland going into the final quarter ‘let off the gas’ and allowed Teeside more space and time to pass the ball about. Teesside were able to get three more goals but couldn’t stop a confident Sunderland finding their form again and scoring four more.

The hosts were definitely the dominant side through the match though they sometimes slowed down – however they are clearly an improving side. Goal attacker Dawson stole the show throughout the match, if she wasn’t the one scoring, she’d be a key part in the build-up.

Sunderland 3rd’s next fixture in the BUCS League is York St John 6th’s who are currently sat 2nd in the league.
