University of Sunderland tennis captain Phil Rudd is looking forward to this week’s cup match away to Chester 2nds.

Sunderland reached the second round of the Northern Conference Cup after a victory over Hull men’s 2nds a fortnight ago and Rudd is hopeful of progressing further in the competition.

“A cup run would be great so hopefully we can play our best tennis on Wednesday,” he said.

“We should be able to go there with a strong team so hopefully we can get a positive result.”

Even so, Sunderland will be without their established number one Konstantinos Axelos, who hasn’t lost a match in the league this season.

Sunderland are still searching for their first win in the BUCS Northern 4B division, after two draws and one defeat.

This will be their first ever meeting with Chester, who play their league matches in the Northern 4A League.

Chester received a bye in the first round of the competition.
